Everything electrical gives off an electromagnetic field (EMF) even if it’s only a tiny one. Since electrical devices were invented, we’ve heard people tell us not to sit too close to them, not to use them too much or to just be wary of them giving off radiation in general. While most of these suggestions weren’t very helpful and were based on scare stories rather than science, it is true that EMFs can be harmful at high levels and over long periods of time. This sounds like bad news for our infrared saunathat runs on electricity rather than heated coals but our sauna is ultra-low EMF and completely safe.
What is EMF?
Electromagnetic fields are creating by all electrical devices and by power lines and energy meters. It is one of the fundamental forces that affect the particles that make up the universe. That sounds very grand but it’s a generally harmless force that is emitted from everything from your electric toothbrush to your TV. Because human bodies have electrical currents in them too, they can be affected be electromagnetic fields and this is why they can be potentially harmful.
What are the Potential Problems?
At high levels and over extended periods of time, EMFs have been linked to increased risk of cancer including leukaemia in children under 15 and brain cancer. It has also been linked to increased risk of miscarriage during pregnancy but these risk are only at very high levels over a long period of time. Essentially, you could spend a whole week with your face pressed up against your microwave on full blast and not be exposed to even nearly a strong enough EMF to cause these risks. Less harmfully, there is also a risk that EMFs could disrupt human nerve function as this also works using electric currents. Some studies have found links between EMFs and poor sleep, headaches, tiredness, dizziness, anxiety, depression, and loss of appetite but they have not been conclusive. This is why we often see advice about having as few electronic devices in our bedrooms as possible.
EMF in Infrared Saunas
It seems odd, therefore, that sitting in a small area, like an individual infrared sauna, surrounded by electronic equipment would be good for you. While the equipment used to generate heat in an infrared sauna does indeed create an EMF, the material used in our particular infrared sauna at The Float Spa insulates it so only a very tiny amount reaches the user. Very low EMF infrared saunas (amongst which ours is exceptionally low) give off a less strong EMF than a blender and far less than a TV or computer. At these kinds of levels, there is absolutely no risk of any kind of harm or even noticeable effect.
Because we only offer our clients treatments and classes with provable benefits so would never take even the tiniest risk that something could cause harm, we looked into this issue thoroughly and bought an infrared sauna that had the lowest EMF available. Either way, we know that our infrared sauna only does you good. To find out about all the benefits of our infrared saunaor to book a session, call 01273 933680.
